History

After the independence (14th August 1947) the total number of ophthalmologists left in the country perhaps could be counted on the fingers There were a few in Karachi, some in Lahore, one each at Shikarpur, Quetta, Daska, Taxila etc., Karachi: Dr. A. D. Minhas, Dr. Mahmood Ali, Dr. Anklesaria, Lahore: Dr. Ramzan Ali Syed, Dr. M. Bashir, Peshawar: Dr. Qazi A. Jabbar, Quetta: Dr. Henry Holland, Taxila: Dr. N. E. Christi. Besides a few in the armed forces. There was no Ophthalmic Society what so ever, although all India Ophthalmic Society existed since 1942.

Then to our good luck, a person like Dr. Raja Mumtaz, a smart young man arrived on the scene. Dr. Raja Mumtaz then wrote letters to all the ophthalmologists to his knowledge in both the wings of the country (East Pakistan and West Pakistan). for the formation of Ophthalmological Society of Pakistan.To convene a meeting on Thursday the 19th December, 1957 at 2 PM in Lecture Theatre No. 2, Patiala Block K. K.E Medical College, Lahore, for the formation of "Ophthalmological Society of Pakistan". thus the OSP was born....... With the aim

  •   To extend ophthalmic knowledge and to advance the arts and sciences of ophthalmology and related sciences in Pakistan.
  •   To cultivate social and fraternal relationship of physicians residing in Asia.
  •   To offer post-graduate instructions in ophthalmology through the medium of lectures, round-table discussions, seminars, clinics, films and other means.

After the resignation of Lt. Gen. Burki from the society in February 1959 fresh elections were held to elect new office bearers in April 1960 and the followings were elected.

The OSP took a lot of interest in uplift of the profession and got itself recognised by the International Federation of Ophthalmological Societies on 23-08-1966.

The minutes of the proceedings were published in Medicus by Dr. T. Ahmed from (Dacca) A news item appeared in the local newpaper Pakistan Times on 18th Dec. regarding this inaugural meeting.In February 1959, Lt. Gen. Burki expressed his inability to carry on as President of the Society through his letter of 20th February 1959.
